Elbow Room Free Workshop Series

The last Saturday of each month we're hosting The Elbow Room Workshops. Come to the store 9am - 10am the last Saturday of each month for a free lesson. All are welcome, as space allows, no sign up, no fees, just have a good time. Here's what we've got coming up:

FINGERSTYLE with Bill Crahan

Saturday, July 25, 9-10 am

In this workshop, we'll look at picking patterns in both 3/4 and 4/4 time as well as basic Travis style accompaniment and how to incorporate the melody into the Travis style. Beginner to intermediate.

PLAY WELL WITH OTHERS with Martha Haehl

Saturday, August 29, 9-10 am

Just in time to brush up for Winfield! Join Martha (author of the great book 'Play Well With Others: A Musicians's Guide to Jamming Like a Pro') as she takes you through the basics of joining others in a jam session. Martha's workshop here back in April was a lot of fun and we look forward to having her back again.

ADVANCED FINGERSTYLE with Bill Crahan

Saturday, September 26, 9-10 am

In this workshop, we'll look at playing in altered tunings, as well as explore how to go about learning advanced solo fingerstyle compositions for guitar.

The great Steve Kaufman will be performing here at Mass Street Music on Saturday, April 18, 2009, at 7:30p.m. We're very excited to have this superb musician here. Steve's music covers a broad range of styles, including bluegrass, swing, Irish and Appalachian fiddle tunes and folk and country classics. He's been captivating audiences from California to Austria since 1976 and is the author of more than 100 instructional materials as well as 18 recordings to date. While in town, Steve will also be teaching two workshops - a Mandolin Workshop and a Guitar Workshop. Limited seating, so get your tickets now. (Credit card/internet/phone orders note there is a $1.50 service charge per ticket). Steve Kaufman Guitar Workshop, April 17-18, 2009

The great Steve Kaufman will be leading this great "2-Day, 8-Hour, All-Level Guitar Workshop" here at Mass Street Music. It begins on Friday, April 17, from 6:30p.m. to 8:30p.m. AND runs through Saturday, April 18, 9:30a.m. to around 3:30p.m., with a break around noon. Bring your guitar! On Friday night, Steve will get to know each student, answer questions, give pointers and evaluate each student's strengths and weaknesses. Steve will then tailor the Saturday workshop for the group where he will cover core picking skills and techniques, repertoire and building blocks for growth. Space is limited. Kelly Joe Phelps in Concert, March 22, 2008

Kelly Joe Phelps is in a class all his own with a truly unique hybrid of blues, jazz and gospel sounds that are as twisted as they are hauntingly beautiful. On his latest album, "Tunesmith Retrofit" Phelps delves deeper into singer/songwriter territory with astounding results. Mass Street Music is proud to join with Chris Freeman in presenting a very special evening with Kelly Joe Phelps at the historic Folly Theater in Kansas City, Missouri on Saturday, March 22nd at 7:00 p.m. Special guest Bob Harvey opens the show.

Phelps' solo acoustic fingerstyle blues have been called captivating, mesmerizing and inspiring. Fans of Steve Earle, Charlie Parr and Nickel Creek should not miss this show. Don Ross and Andy McKee in Concert, March 21, 2008

We're very pleased to welcome back Don Ross and Andy McKee for an evening of masterful fingerstyle music. Entertaining and inspiring, Ross and McKee are simply spectacular live and we look forward to hosting them this time at the Lawrence Community Theater, which has fantastic acoustics. Andy McKee took 3rd place in the 2001 National Fingerstyle Guitar Competition at Winfield and 1st place in the 2004 Kansas Fingerstyle Guitar Competition. Canadian sensation Don Ross is the only person to have won the National Fingerstyle Guitar Competition TWICE - 1988 and 1996. The duo will perform on Friday, March 21, 2008 @ 7:30pm at the Lawrence Community Theater, 1501 New Hampshire.
