They combined the best of the previous Gain Stage Red pedal and the Gain Stage Purple - making a new, super versatile overdrive. The 'Red' setting is designed after the hard setting of the GS Red, giving super responsive Robben Ford-ish tone while the 'Shift' takes you over to something more like the GS Purple (Plexie fans rejoice! This is indispensable for leads too). A multitude of tonal options are all here, in a true bypass pedal. "Just got mine after a year of wanting one. This pedal is killer. Definitely if you are a Ford/Carlton junkie you need this one, but I've been using mine as more of a basic overdrive along with my AC Booster it is fantastic. You may have heard about the warm and thick Robben Ford inspired overdrive - this pedal definitely does that, but it's so much more! It has tons of gain on tap and at higher gain settings, the bottom end holds together surprisingly well! It seems with most distortion/overdrives that you end up compromising something - with high gain settings, you might end up sacrificing harmonics for crisper tone and string to string definition OR you get the great harmonics but the low end gets sloppy, taking away from your attack. This Red Shift compromises nothing! It's all here. When I kick it on, it actually sounds like a killer overdrive channel on a boutique amp, not just a dirt box.
