OK, technically this Don Grosh Hollow Retro Classic VT is a used guitar. It was owned for a brief period of time but.... It is perfect, as-new, mint. Not one hint of being played. Perfect. This Hollow RCVT looks, plays and sounds like Tele heaven. It just doesn't get any better. This has an incredible Swamp Ash top and body that are absolutely beautiful and incredibly light. Is this not one of the sweetest finishes to ever be created? The Mary Kay White finish just never gets old. The one on this Grosh Retro Classic is, of course, perfect, as would only be allowed by the Grosh folks. Joined with a beautiful Birdseye Maple neck, this guitar is just "so sweet".
Of course it sounds just as sweet. We've said it many times, but it still rings true, you do not even need to plug a Grosh in to know that you've reached the top of the sonic spectrum. I never cease to be amazed by Don's guitars and this Grosh Retro Classic VT is no exception. This is just a beautiful repro of one of the most classic designs of all time - but taken to the next level. You only need to play this guitar for two minutes and you absolutely fall in love with the way it feels. The medium large roundback neck has such a retro vibe, but fortunately the 10" radius and meticulously finished 6105 frets allow for much easier playability. Grosh actually rounds the neck and frets off, to create a great "played in" feel. The body also has the Back Contour which adds yet another level of refined comfort. The weight (6 pounds, 10 ounces) is perfect and the Butterscotch finish is not only flawless, but the looks just make you pick the instrument up automatically. No motivation necessary to play this one.
How about the sound? Simply amazing. We feel Don has the best wood out there and this Swamp Ash body coupled with the one-piece Maple neck create almost endless sustain. It just makes playing more effortless when the tone is right - and the sustain and resonant quality of the instrument don't leave you searching for another note due to quickly decaying tone. On the contrary, a guitar like this allows you to play less when necessary and still create great feel. Fit and finish is second to none. This was our first semi-hollow Set Neck and right off the bat, we were absolutely in love with the weight, right at 8 pounds even. While the semi-hollow adds extra overtones, making this guitar as sweet as can be in the midrange, it subtracts nothing from the ferocity of the Set Neck's overall tone and punch. Ridiculously touch sensitive, the guitar and the custom wound Fralin Unbuckers allow one to cover anything from jazz to full-on "face melting" metal rhythms and solos! The medium large roundback neck, with 6100 frets and 1 11/16" nut width feels like a great old '56 Les Paul and plays as smooth as silk. This is a really sweet Don Grosh Custom Carve Top that is dead mint. It's an all Mahogany body finished in Gloss Black with scrape "see-through" binding. Couple this with a Mahogany neck and you have an instrument that looks stunning and sounds absolutely wonderful.
